Karen Brown - Biography

Karen Brown

Unlike many other artists, I grew up thinking I didn’t have an artistic bone in my body.  When I was considering studying Interior Design, I first asked if I needed to be able to draw before deciding if I should proceed!  I’m not sure what I was told, but I went ahead.  That was the beginning!  I discovered that drawing is about seeing.  I started to work on art in earnest when I retired in 2007, taking courses at ACAD.  With the encouragement of an instructor, it is here that I first started exhibiting and selling my work.

My first love was creating still life interiors.  I was then attracted to abstract work which took the form of hard edge, often utilizing colours that would vibrate.  During Covid, I found myself going back to drawing and its meditative aspect.  As the restrictions relaxed, this evolved into onsite drawing, coupled with mixed media to tell a story about my subject.  This experience made me feel like tourist in my own city and evolved into a series featuring historic houses in Calgary.

The series includes Colonel Walker’s House, Nellie McClung’s house, the Coste House, the Lougheed House and the Bow Valley Ranch.  I am now working on the Deane House.

In the fall of 2024 I shifted gears once more and resumed my exploration of abstract.  My most recent series of work is named The Circle Game after Joni Mitchell's song of the same name.

"We can't return we can only look behind from where we came and go round and round in the circle game."

I was born and married in Montreal.  My husband Bob and I moved to Calgary in the early years of our marriage.  We have traveled extensively and enjoy spending time in museums and art galleries.  I am a member of several art groups and show my work two or more times a year.
